Session 1-Begins at 8:30 am

Canine Diabetes and Diabetic Ketoacidosis (Greco-1 Hr)  Pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus in the dog including the genetic and environmental aspects of the development of diabetes in the dog. Diagnosis and treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar coma.

Diet and Feline Diabetes Mellitus: The Carnivore Connection (Greco-1 Hr)  Pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the cat with particular emphasis on the dietary circumstances that lead to the development of diabetes in the cat. Discussion of the role of carbohydrates and protein in feeding diabetic cats. Description of the clinical appearance of type 2 diabetes mellitus and discussion of early diagnosis and treatment.

Diet, Insulin and Oral Hypoglycemics: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Greco-1 Hr)  Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in cats using the combination of a high protein, low carbohydrate diet and oral hypoglycemic agents. An overview of the use of oral hypoglycemic agents such as sulfonylureas, biguanides, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, transition metals, and thiazolodinediones. Discussion of the different insulin types, choosing the appropriate insulin for a particular patient and problem-shooting insulin administration problems.

Session II - Begins at 1:00 pm

Beyond Glucose Curves and Approach to the Problem Diabetic Patient (Greco-1 Hr)  A focused view of monitoring diabetic dogs and cats including urine glucose monitoring, clinical signs, and blood glucose curves. Emphasis on the new developments in monitoring diabetics such as glycosylated serum proteins (fructosamine). Case studies of difficult to manage diabetics. Approach to problem-solving difficult diabetic regulation.

Polyuria and Polydipsia (Feldman-1 Hr)  Inappropriate urination can be caused by a number of conditions. This discussion will focus on a logical, practical, cost-effective method of diagnosing the cause of inappropriate urination in a dog or cat. The discussion will finish with a review of diabetes insipidus and its diagnosis and treatment.

Hypercalcemia and Primary Hyperparathyroidism (Feldman-1 Hr)  This discussion will begin with a review of the differential diagnosis for hypercalcemia and then focus on primary hyperparathyroidism. The talk will include the most common clinical signs, typical laboratory tests results, and tests used to confirm a diagnosis. Treatment options will be discussed with a brief review of surgery and then results of novel therapies.

Session III-Begins at 8:30 am

Diagnosis of Cushing’s Syndrome (Feldman-90 Min)  Cushing’s syndrome in dogs is diagnosed with some frequency. With the addition of new tests and continued evaluation of tests utilized for years, this discussion will review options as well as focusing on those tests currently recommended.

Treatment of Cushing’s (Feldman-90 Min)   There are various treatment options for dogs with this condition. This discussion will review those therapies used for decades as well as those more recently introduced to the veterinary profession.

Session IV-Begins at 1:00 pm

Large Pituitary Tumors (Feldman-1 Hr)   As the veterinary profession has improved the treatment strategies for dogs with Cushing’s syndrome, they live longer than ever before. With longevity comes more time for pituitary tumor growth in dogs with pituitary Cushing’s. This discussion will review the most common clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of dogs that have large pituitary tumors.

Canine Hypothyroidism, Hypoadrenocorticism and Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndromes (Greco-1 Hr)   A general discussion of the etiology, clinical presentation and diagnostic testing protocols for canine hypothyroidism. Discussion of endogenous TSH, free T4 by dialysis, TT4 and thyroglobulin antibody tests. Diagnosis and treatment of canine hypoadrenocorticism. Discussion of autoimmune polyglandular syndromes in dogs with discussion of the concurrent treatment of diabetes and hypothroidism, hypothyroidism and hypoadrenocorticism, and diabetes.

Update on Feline Thyroid Disorders (Greco-1 Hr)   Diagnosis and treatment of feline hyperthyroidism including discussion of anti-thyroid drug therapy, diet, I-131 and surgical treatments and side effects. Diagnosis and treatment of feline hypothyroidism.
